Is the earth really shaking more?

Japan, Taiwan, Turkey, Myanmar, Dhaka — it feels like earthquakes are everywhere. Here's the honest, charted answer: which of them actually connect to Bangladesh, and which only connect in your feed.

Global M5+ earthquakes per year · 1970–2025

~1,500 M5+ per year, flat for five decades. What grew: seismometers (200 → 20,000+), phones, and people living in seismic zones. The rate didn't increase — the awareness did.

Energy scale · why "small releases stress" is a myth

Each magnitude step is ~32× more energy. An M7.5 carries ~1,000× the energy of an M5.4 — small quakes cannot drain a locked fault.

The connection that matters

ONE BOUNDARY

Japan and Taiwan sit on different plates — no causal link to Dhaka. But NE India, Myanmar, the Andaman arc and Bangladesh share the India–Eurasia–Burma convergence zone. Stress in one segment can transfer along this boundary: the Assam M5.3 (Feb 2025) and Tungi M5.4 (Nov 2025) may be related that way. Everything else is coincidence plus your feed.

Short answer: yes and no. Quakes on the same plate-boundary system are connected (stress transfer). Quakes on opposite sides of the planet are not. The global rate is within historical norms — what changed is our awareness.

03 The knowledge that isn't available everywhere

1 · The 2025–26 cluster is not a foreshock sequence

Only ~5% of earthquakes are foreshocks. The cluster released negligible stress on the Madhupur locked segment — the long-term probability of M6.5+ remains unchanged at ~1.5% per year.

2 · Global quakes connect — but not how you think

Japan, Taiwan, Turkey: different plates, no causal link. NE India, Myanmar, Bangladesh: same boundary — Assam M5.3 and Tungi M5.4 may be stress transfer along the convergence zone.

3 · The real threat isn't random — it's Madhupur

~60% of its expected stress cycle complete, last M7+ about 400 years ago, Dhaka 20 km away. M6.5 under Dhaka = MMI VIII–IX — the credible worst case worth preparing for.

4 · The one nobody talks about: Chittagong subduction

264 years since the last M8+, ~78% stressed, capable of M8.8 plus tsunami — the same system as Sumatra 2004. Century-scale recurrence pushed it out of public memory; it's still the biggest hazard.

5 · Preparedness > prediction — always

No model can predict when. Every engineer knows what to design for. BNBC 2020 is a good code — the gap is enforcement and retrofit. Retrofitting schools and hospitals beats any early-warning system 10 to 1.

6 · The "quakes everywhere" feeling is real

More people experience shaking (population + density), social media amplifies every tremor, and Bangladesh genuinely is in a cluster — a statistically normal one. Awareness rose, not the rate. Good — if it drives preparation.

The one sentence to remember: Bangladesh sits on active faults that will produce damaging earthquakes — the only question is when, not if — and the best response is preparation, not panic.
